Mission

Data Circles (formerly SeaWiDS) is a supportive community which focuses on inspiring and empowering women in data science through professional development, knowledge sharing, and mentorship. We wish to lift up women in all levels of their data science journey to find community, support and growth. We strive to host a diverse group of speakers including women of color, immigrants, veterans, LGBTQ women, and women with disabilities.

The beginning

Data Circles was founded first as Women in Data Science - Seattle in November 2017, holding its first event February 2018. From the start, founder Mahnaz Akbari, intended to create a safe and welcoming space for women in data science to connect and excel together. Although our events are open to everybody, we host only female/non-binary speakers to highlight the role of this group in this field.

The Challenge

Women in data science face a unique set of challenges. By showcasing female role models in the field, we can attract more talent to data scientist and data analyst career paths. We meet once a month to listen to a technical talk on advanced topics in the field, then discuss and network afterward. We also host weekly study groups both in Seattle and the East side, mentoring sessions, and career development workshops. Our members come from various backgrounds and with different levels of expertise in data science.

The Response

We are growing fast, and the positive response that we have received from members reconfirms the need for our group in the Seattle data science community!

“Thank you for being a catalyst for women in DS in the Seattle Area. It's very exciting to watch that group grow and see connections flourish.”
